Doz. Johannes Grisar, M.D. studied and graduated at the Medical University of Vienna from 1991 to 1998. In his doctoral thesis, he investigated the role of CD54 in monocytes undergoing trans endothelial migration. He then completed his fellowship in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology at the Division of Rheumatology at the Medical University of Vienna headed by Professor Josef Smolen. In 2009, he became an associate Professor with his postdoctoral lecture qualification titled „Endothelial progenitor cells in rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus“.
He also has been awarded fellowships from the American Arthritis Association and the Austrian Science fund working at the Stanford University of Medicine in California in Professor Cornelia Weyand´s lab from 2009 to 2011.
In 2013 he changed from the Medical University in Vienna to the St. Vincent Hospital in Vienna working as a Specialist and Senior Consultant in Rheumatology for 4 years. Since 2017 he serves as head of the outpatient department of Sanatorium Hera and since 2012 he runs a private practice at the Wiener Privatklinik.
Prof. Grisar achieved several awards including the prestigious Billroth-price of the Viennese medical association.
He is a member of the Austrian Society of Rheumatology and the Austrian Society of Internal Medicine, and he is also Vice-Head of the Karl Landsteiner Institute of Gastroenterology and Rheumatology.
His main focus is in rheumatoid arthritis, spondyloarthritis, psoriatic arthritis, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis and systemic lupus erythematosus.
