Education
Study of medicine at the University of Ulm, Germany, 1977-1983. Training in neurology and psychiatry at the Universities of Ulm and Vienna 1984 - 1991. Study visits to the Universities of La Sapienza (Rome) 1988, College des France (1991) and Simon Fraser University (Burnaby - Vancouver) 1994 on topics of cognitive brain research using magnetoencephalography (MEG) and positron emission tomography (PET) methods. Training in clinical neurophysiology 1991 - 1993. Habilitation in 1992, associate university professorship 1998 (University of Vienna).

Deputy Head of the General Outpatient Clinic Senior Physician at the Department of Clinical Neurology of the Univ. Department of Neurology 1993-1994, Head of the Outpatient Clinic 1994-1996. Neurological Senior Physician at the Intensive Care Unit 13C2 in 1996/ 1997, Head of the Intensive Care Unit 15H 1997 - 2002. Establishment and management of a research group on cognitive brain research 1986 - 2002, establishment and management of the Vienna Stroke Working Group (1995 - 2002) and coordinator of the Vienna Stroke Plan in 1999. Establishment and coordination of the "Stroke Database for Vienna" 1998 - 2002.
Head of the Department of Neurology, Neurological Rehabilitation and Acute Geriatrics since 2002. Founding member of the Austrian Stroke Society, since then member of the board and president (2008 - 2012). Establishment and coordination of the "Austrian Stroke Registry" (2002 to date).

(1) Analysis of the results of the Austrian Stroke Unit Register, (2) prospective studies on stroke follow-up ("Stroke Card") in cooperation with the University Hospital of Neurology (Innsbruck) and VASCAge, (3) quality indicators of stroke care in Austria and measurement of quality of care (pseudonymized linkage of patient strata in the BMGSK). (4) Collaboration on the "Stroke Action Plan - Europe", SAP-E.
