WIENER PRIVATKLINIK CANCER CENTER: Innovative Methods of Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment
I. PERSONALIZED (TARGETED) CANCER DIAGNOSTIC
Potential beneficiary patients of this type of diagnostic: any oncology patient, regardless of type and stage of disease.
The diagnostic procedure involves several steps and types of investigations, including a layered molecular sequencing of the DNA of tumor cells and healthy cells.
The oncologist coordinator of case decides, based on history, current diagnostic and patient’s medical history, the types of necessary investigations for an accurate diagnosis (the types of investigations that are necessary for an accurate diagnosis).
The final diagnosis is issued by an Interdisciplinary Commission of Experts in Oncology, Genetics and Molecular Biology (Tumor Board) that analyses the molecular characteristics and individual DNA mutations of tumor cells and healthy cells.
The oncologist offers the patient all the medical information generated by/throughout Custom Diagnosis and informs about the Personalized/Customised Treatment Strategy proposed by the Interdisciplinary Medical Commission; what the treatment is and how can be performed.
Personalized Treatment Strategy may include both conventional cancer treatments/classic oncology treatments (chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery) and personalized treatments (targeted) or immuno-oncology therapies.
II. PERSONALIZED (TARGETED) CANCER TREATMENT Potential beneficiary patients of this type of treatment:
- patients who continue to experience a progression/an illness progression, although they have already followed the classic oncology treatments;
b. patients whose disease has no clear indication of treatment (ie. patients with rare tumors) or those that conventional methods cannot bring a clear benefit of treatment (ie. patients with metastatic cervical cancer).
Personalized (targeted) cancer treatment brings an extra chance of treating or extending the quality of life in patients that classical treatment cannot stop disease progression.
Recommended medical steps
- The WPK specialist starts the personalized patient treatment according the strategy issued by the Interdisciplinary Medical Commission (Tumor Board).
- Side effects are carefully monitored and counteracted by dedicated specialists.
- Depending on the progress of the disease, after a number of administrations, the patient may continue treatment in his country, based on international collaboration of WPK specialists with colleagues from other European countries.
- IMMUNE-ONCOLOGY TREATMENTS
Immuno - oncology therapies activate the immune system of the oncology patient, enabling it to recognize and destroy tumor cells.*
Who can benefit: oncology patients who continue to experience a progression/an illness progression although they have already followed the classic oncology treatments.
Evidence from clinical trials shows that the effects of immuno-oncology therapies act for a long time, involving the immune system to fight tumor cells even after remission is achieved. This important feature of immunotherapy offers for the first time hope of a quality long-term survival for many patients whose previous prognosis was very reserved.*
Immunotherapy is successfully used especially in treating advanced stages (of) melanoma, some types of lung cancer and some types of leukemia.
Recommended medical steps
- WPK specialist starts immuno-oncology patient treatment according the strategy issued by the Tumor Board.

- CANCER SCREENING PROGRAMS
Because of oncological diseases incidence, the specialists of Wiener Privatklinik recommend Check up type preventive programs both to general population, especially after the age of 35-40 years, and family members of cancer patients, who may be carriers of genetic mutations with oncological higher risk.
The programs are coordinated by oncologists/(oncology specialists) who decide customisation/personalization of each program according to the clinical and genetic characteristics of each patient.
